The Rules of this Contest
Listed below are extracts from the rules of this competition. These extracts detail the rights being claimed from entrants.
"4.1.1 All Users expressly agree that by entering into the Competition (whether national Competition or the Assignment), he/she automatically grants to Canon the non-exclusive, free of charge and royalty-free right to sub-license to members of the Canon Group in Europe Middle East and Africa, use, reproduce and/or display in any format and support any Photograph that he/she uploads on this Website or, if relevant, that he/she takes during the Assignment, for the purpose of supporting and promoting internally and externally on the Internet and in Europe Middle East and Africa for a period of two years from the date of entering the Competition:
a. this Competition; and
b. the results of this Competition
items a and b could include (for example)-
a. internal and external exhibitions and events that exhibit entries to this Competition
b. use in presentations that refer to this Competition
c. hardcopy or electronic publications or manuals about this Competition"
"4.1.2 Provided that Canon and its affiliates act within the scope of the license provided above, User expressly acknowledge Canon and its affiliates’ right to treat User’s Photograph at their sole discretion, and with this respect waive any right to inspect or approve any printed or electronic use of the Photographs in relation to the above-mentioned purposes."
"4.1.3 Canon and its affiliates shall always identify User as the author of the Photograph for any use of the Photograph licensed by User to Canon and its affiliates under clauses 4.1.1 just above."
"4.1.4 In the event that Canon or a member of the Canon Group in Europe Middle East and Africa wishes to use a Photograph for a period longer than two years or outside the scope of the purposes described above, Canon or that member will contact you to ask for your consent."
"4.1.5 Except as expressly provided under these Terms and Conditions, no license or right, express or implied is hereby conveyed or granted by User to Canon and its affiliates or by Canon and its affiliates to User in relation to any intellectual property of User or Canon and its affiliates."

This competition meets all the standards set out in
the Bill of Rights For Artists
Competitions which comply with the conditions set out in the Bill of Rights For Artists do not -
- claim copyright
- seek waiving of moral rights
- fail to give a credit for all free usage
- add, alter, or remove metadata from the works
- seek usage rights other than for solely and exclusively promoting the contest. Note that a book, posters, cards, or a calendar are seen as legitimate ways of promoting the contest and defraying costs
- seek free usage rights in excess of 3 years
- use the works commercially without the creators agreement, and such commercial usage is to be rights managed and limited to 3 years.
- make it a condition of winning that an entrant must sign a commercial usage agreement
- fail to publish all documents on the competition website that an entrant may have to sign
- fail to name the judges for this or last year's competition
- fail to explicitly state all the organisations who will acquire rights to the works
- set a closing date more than 18 months after the contest launch date
- fail to make clear statements of rights claimed and how the works are used
