Dear One Voi©e Advocates:
In March 2015, Ms. Farida Shaheed, the UN Special Rapporteur in the Field of Cultural Rights, will be submitting a report to the Human Rights Council that will focus on the impact intellectual property has on the arts.
Presently, Ms. Shaheed recognizes the importance of compensating artists, but she also supports limitations and exceptions that may undermine artists’ rights.
"From the moment we first express an idea to the moment the public accesses our work, we invest large amounts of time, talent and resources to create and make our work available. It is because of legal protections such as copyright that it is possible to earn a living and support our families through the professional pursuit of our creative passions. And because we rely on expression, we often find ourselves on the front lines protecting freedom of expression for all." - Copyright Alliance petition
We have the unique opportunity to share our thoughts with Ms. Shaheed. We would like to convey that strong international copyright protection for creative works is needed so that artists and creators, such as yourselves, can continue to thrive. Too often, such protections are portrayed as obstacles to knowledge and culture.
We encourage you to read and sign the petition, which can be done via the Copyright Alliance Take Action Now tool. Please know that the deadline to take action is September 15.
Make your voice heard on this important matter. Thank you in advance.
Best,
Cecile Remington
